This year, we are organizing a series of Korean cooking workshops with Jan Janszn. Weltevree / Pak Yon Foundation. The first workshop took place this month.

Who is Jan Janszn. Weltevree / Pak Yon (박연, his Korean name)? He was a Dutch sailor from De Rijp, The Netherlands who was the first European to settle in Korea during 17th century. He even became an advisor of the King of Joseon Dynasty (the last kingdom of Korea).

In his honor and in the special occasion of celebrating “450 years of Alkmaar Ontzet”, the Jan Janszn. Weltevree (Pak Yon) Foundation and the municipality of Alkmaar, have organized a series of Korean cooking workshops with us.

For the first session in April, we made Bulgogi (stir-fried soy sauce marinated meat) & Ssam (vegetable wraps), of which are one of Korean iconic dishes. Everyone loved them and were amazed with what they have made during the workshop.

In May, we made Bibimbap (rice mixed with vegetables, egg and/or meat) & Doenjang-jjigae (soybean paste stew). As Bibimbap is gaining more popularity here in The Netherlands, there were even waiting list to join the workshop!

More workshops are planned for the coming months in autumn from September and onward.

If you would like to join the workshop, please contact us by email at info@kimchiinstitute.org
